Welcome to the Sparkly Side

Hi there, and welcome to my public burlesque blog.

In case you don’t already know, I’m Sparkly Devil, and I’ve been performing burlesque for over a decade now.

I’m also a professional journalist, writer and editor – and after years of engaging in discussions, rants, and provoking commentary about burlesque and the burlesque community, I’ve decided to channel my writings into one centralized place.

Welcome! And please feel free to ask me questions if you’d like to hear me discuss a particular topic that pertains to burlesque, performance, and the community at large.

  2. Yay! Hi Miss Sparkly!

  3. Congratulations on launching the blog, Sparkly! I love your writing in other venues; I’m looking forward to seeing your thoughts here.

Along those lines, let me throw out a question for you: what got you interested in the history of burlesque?

  4. Howdy,
I’ve enjoyed your excellent articles and posts about the Neo-Burlesque movement. I’m an amateur male burlesque performer. I truly enjoy the art of burlesque and feel a desire to get up on stage more myself. I have a show coming up in a few months and I’ve got a few questions.
What is the state of male burlesque today? Are there Male move standards ( i.e. the Female glove pull, stocking pull, tassel spinning, final reveal… etc)? What are appropriate props for a Male performer?
Where is the line between a Drag show and a Burlesque show?
Also, what is the requirement for Male performers to wear pasties, is men showing nipples acceptable?

    Thanks

    • Hi Will – that’s great! I love boylesque and I’m always thrilled to see new boylesque performers!

Boylesque is still so new, and is just now starting to really explode, which is exciting. I have seen several boylesque performers put tassels on their jock strap/undies and twirl them – but that is something I *never* get tired of seeing! 🙂 And as far as props – anything goes, as long as you can work it!

Re: pasties – I have seen male performers do both; I think it’s really about what you personally feel comfortable in. Legally, male nipples are permitted in public. Artistically, it is up to you 🙂

Have you watched some other boylesque performers on Youtube? That’s a great place to start familiarizing yourself with what’s out there: some of my favorites are Tigger!, Jett Adore, Twinkletoes McGee, and Sexy Mark Brown.

I hope to see one of your performances soon!

      • Oh, and Jonny Porkpie in NYC!

      • Thanks for the information, it’s very helpful. I’m very excited to embark on a fantastic journey as a Burlesque (or Boylesque) performer. I’ll definitely check out other male performers to see whats being done and to get inspiration. All the beautiful and talented female burlesque performers out there can’t have all the fun. I’ve got my work cut out for me.

        Best wishes and Fabulous thanks,
        Locks Luscious
